Crossing the Daintree River

The Daintree River Ferry is the gateway to the Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation. This council-owned cable ferry carries cars, caravans, motorbikes, cyclists and pedestrians across the Daintree River at Lower Daintree, about 50 km north of Port Douglas.

The ferry runs continuously from 5am to midnight every day, including Christmas Day, and the crossing takes around 15 minutes including loading and unloading. Tickets can be bought online before you travel, at the tollbooth on the southern side of the river, or on board. Expect queues in peak season and school holidays.

Douglas Card holders travel free from 1 November to the end of February each year.
